Pu-erh tea is one of the oldest types of tea we ever know. Many years ago, generations of ancient Chinese emperors were already enjoying a cup of this healthy and tasty tea. Pu-erh is grown mainly in southwestern part of China in Yunnan province, but currently is also produced in Taiwan. The name of the tea was given after the district town where had this tea been produced. Pu-Erh is nowadays very popular in Europe and America, especially because of its universal effects on our health, well-being and the ability to help us reduce fat and lose weight. Production of Pu-Erh

Pu-erh tea is made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis. This is the same plant that is used for making of other kinds of tea, such as oolong or green tea. Though the same source plant is used, the different teas are made by using of different processes. Pu-erh tea leaves must pass through fermentation, partial roasting and the most important storage and aging in high humidity environment (90%) for several years. It’s being said that the older tea, the stronger effects it eventually may have on our health. During the ripening of the tea, the beneficial fungus is developed which consequently destroys the other kinds of tea. Therefore the “older” Pu-erh can smell musty or taste stale. This tea can be watered several times. It can be brewed as many times, as old it is. In our shops we can find 3 – 20 years old tea.

Description of Pu-Erh

The tea has a distinctive earthy flavor. A cup of this brewed tea may be dark brown to dark pinkish-brown colour. It is made from large leaves. It is recommended to drink not more than 3 cups per day.

Effects of Pu-erh tea

Pu-erh is very popular because of its reputation of slimming and energizing drink which strengthens your mind and reduce fat reserves. But the fact is that this tea contains relatively low amount of caffeine and other substances that might reduce blood cholesterol level. Hidden caffeine works by stimulating the central nervous system, heart and muscles. Pu-erh tea also contains antioxidants that might help to protect our heart and blood vessels.

Pu-erh contains lovastatin, the substance which we can find in cholesterol lowering agents. Lovastatins can be found in Pu-erh in tis natural form. Animal research has proved that Pu-erh might lower certain blood fats called triglycerides. It might also fairly quickly lower blood alcohol levels and eliminate headaches. But the reason of its popularity is somewhere else. Pu-erh can demonstrably reduce blood fat and fat reserves which you have been trying to get rid of for years. Side effects of Pu-erh

Pu-erh has certainly a positive impact on our health. However, too much of pu-erh tea might be harmful. It is recommended not to drink more than 5 cups a day. Too much drinking of this tea might cause nervousness, migraine, sleep disorders, diarrhea, irregular heartbeat or confusion and disorientation. Especially those who are taking medicaments based on ephedrine or cimetidine should be very careful.
